THE REAL EMERGENCY BEGINS AFTER THE FLOOD

By Sai Sanskar Foundation | Published: August 3, 2026

For generations, floods have shaped Assam’s landscape. But what has changed is the scale of destruction.

Longer periods of inundation, accelerating riverbank erosion and repeated displacement have turned a seasonal challenge into a recurring development crisis.

In 2026, Assam saw floods across 7 districts - Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Kamrup Metro.

551+ villages were submerged. 45,341 hectares of crops were destroyed.

The Government of Assam has strengthened rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts. Sai Sanskar Foundation complements this by delivering emergency relief, mobile healthcare, WASH support and long-term recovery for vulnerable families.

Donate to Sai Sanskar Foundation and help Assam rebuild with dignity.

WHY ASSAM FLOOD RELIEF CANNOT WAIT

Assam has faced floods for over 7 decades. The Brahmaputra, Barak and 50+ tributaries make it one of India’s most flood-prone states.

A Timeline of Assam’s Flood Journey

- 1954 – First major post-independence flood. Focus on embankments began

- 1962–1988 – Flooding became an annual challenge disrupting agriculture and infrastructure

- 1998–2004 – Rising human and economic losses

- 2012–2020 – Climate risks intensified. 2020 floods reshaped disaster planning

- 2026 – Flood risk expanded beyond traditional zones. Districts with low history of inundation were also hit

Floods are no longer isolated events. Their frequency, changing geography and socio-economic impact demand a broader response.

WHY ASSAM FLOOD RELIEF CANNOT WAIT

Between 2002 and 2022, floods affected nearly 40 million hectares across India. Assam remains among the most vulnerable states because of the Brahmaputra basin - heavy rainfall, high sediment load and vast floodplains.

This creates a cycle:

Homes rebuilt → Livelihoods restored → Another flood arrives

The impact goes beyond emergency relief:

1. Livelihoods Under Stress

Agriculture is Assam’s backbone. Floods damage crops, livestock and markets. Riverbank erosion permanently reduces land. Families fall into debt and migration.

2. Education Interrupted

When schools become relief shelters, children lose classroom time. Repeated disruptions increase dropout risk, especially for vulnerable communities.

3. Healthcare at Risk

Floods damage health facilities and cut medicine supply. Risk of water-borne diseases, maternal complications and child illness rises. Continuity of healthcare is as critical as rescue.
